Historical Context & Overview
Standing quietly amidst the meticulous gardens of Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Sea Gull Monument is one of the most uniquely revered public sculptures in the American West. Captured in vibrant color on this mid-century chrome postcard, the monument honors a defining moment in Utah’s pioneer history—the famed "Miracle of the Gulls" in the spring of 1848.
The Miracle of the Gulls and Mahonri Young’s Design
In 1848, early Latter-day Saint pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley faced devastating agricultural loss when massive swarms of native Mormon crickets descended upon their first food crops. According to historical accounts, vast flocks of California gulls unexpectedly arrived from the nearby Great Salt Lake, devouring the crickets over several weeks and saving the settlement’s harvest from total destruction. Deeply grateful for what they viewed as divine intervention, the State of Utah later designated the California gull as its official state bird.
To commemorate this miracle, church leaders commissioned prominent sculptor Mahonri M. Young—a grandson of pioneer leader Brigham Young—to craft a permanent monument. Dedicated on October 1, 1913, the structure features a tall granite pedestal topped by a bronze sphere, upon which two bronze seagulls are poised mid-flight. Bas-relief panels at the base depict the pioneer migration, the cricket plague, the arrival of the gulls, and the eventual harvest.
Mid-Century Views of Temple Square
This postcard highlights the artwork within its architectural context at Temple Square. Framed by mature trees and manicured floral beds, the monument stands prominently in the foreground. In the background to the left sits the distinctive domed roof of the historic Salt Lake Tabernacle, famous for its acoustic grandeur and pioneer engineering. To the right, the granite spires of the Salt Lake Temple rise toward the cloud-dappled Utah sky, creating a serene portrait of Salt Lake City's primary cultural landmark.
